Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP)

The JFDP is a non-degree, professional development program intended to provide opportunities for young faculty with great potential as scholars and instructors in their disciplines to:

- develop new courses and implement curriculum reform at their home institutions;
- cultivate teaching skills and techniques derived from exposure to U.S. educational methods;
- expand the information base in their fields of study, and;
- become a vehicle for on-going contact and exchange between home and host institutions.

JFDP Fellows work with an American colleague to further develop their knowledge of teaching methodologies, theoretical aspects of their field, and to create new courses and course materials for use at their home institutions. The program is intended to support those scholars who plan to return to their home country in order to continue their teaching and professional activities.

The competition is open to citizens of Turkmenistan, who currently teach at a higher educational institution in their home country (with the exception of those applying in the fields of Arts Management and Library and Archival Science), have a mastery of English language and possess a kandidatskaia or two years of teaching experience in an institution of higher education. Applicants in the fields of Arts Management and Library and Archival Science need a university degree and two years of work experience in that field.

For the 2007 - 2008 academic year, JFDP Fellows will undertake a 5-month, non-degree program (auditing courses, teaching/lecturing, developing curricula, attending conferences). Fellows are placed at U.S. host institutions which have facilities and faculty appropriate for their field of study. JFDP Fellows receive round-trip international and domestic transportation, medical insurance, monthly stipends, and a professional development fund.
