Strengthening Professional Communication Skills: Speaking Sessions with Jessica Leonard

As part of the C5+O.N.E. program’s supplemental activities, two dynamic speaking sessions were delivered by Jessica Leonard, Regional Director for Central Asia at American Councils for International Education, during her recent visit to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Cohort 5 participants took part in highly interactive classes “Mastering Professional Introductions and Networking.” The sessions were designed to strengthen participants’ confidence and communication skills in professional settings, equipping them with practical tools to deliver compelling self-introductions and build professional connections.

Through guided discussions, structured speaking exercises, and real-life networking simulations, Ms. Leonard provided participants with actionable strategies to clearly articulate their academic and professional goals, highlight their strengths, and engage authentically with diverse audiences. The sessions emphasized clarity, confidence, and strategic communication — core competencies essential for academic and career advancement in regional and international contexts.

“It was an interesting and enriching experience, especially since within our own group we have already grown accustomed to each other and understand one another almost effortlessly. In these sessions, however, we were mixed with other program participants, which challenged us to demonstrate our knowledge and skills. It served as a kind of rehearsal for our upcoming events and provided a valuable opportunity to connect with other participants,” — Marina Kim, Cohort 5 participant.

These speaking sessions significantly enriched the cohort’s learning experience by providing direct engagement with a native English-speaking professional and reinforcing the program’s commitment to developing strong communication and networking skills among participants in Turkmenistan.

C5+O.N.E., funded by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by the American Councils for International Education, strengthens English proficiency and professional skills across Central Asia, supporting regional integration and stronger economic ties with the United States for shared prosperity.
